2009 ASCENSION BJJ OPEN

Rules and Restrictions to note:

"Wrestling shoes or any type of shoes, head gear, shirts under the gi (except for girls) and any kind of protectors that can alter the outcome of the match in any way are not allowed in competition."

Just to elaborate, since we have had questions on the above:

- No shoes of any kind are permitted in both gi and no-gi events.
- Male competitors are not permitted to compete bare-chested in the no-gi division--they must wear a t-shirt (not loose fitting) or rashguard.
- Protectors that can alter the outcome of the match--this includes groin protection (eg. unfair advantage to competitor applying an armbar while wearing groin protection). This is a standard (and strictly followed) rule at all IBJJF competitions. Note: It is also enforced in Judo competition.
- Plastic earguards are not permitted; we will allow soft earguards.Other restrictions include:
- In the Junior (16-17) and adult divisions, only achilles (straight ankle) locks are permitted.
- In the Purple/Brown/Black Belt division, straight kneebars and toe-holds are also permitted.
- The "gogoplata" will only be permitted in the Blue Belt and Purple/Brown/Black Belt divisions.
- Slamming of any kind warrants immediate disqualification (this includes slamming from within an opponent's guard position and during takedowns).
- Cervical locks (neck cranks, including "can openers" and guillotenes from mount position) are not permitted.
- Poor sportsmanship demonstrated by competitors (but also including coaches and teammates) towards the opposing competitor(s), referee(s) and event staff will be given one warning (depending on severity of the offense), followed by immediate disqualification. This will be enforced at all BJJO events, which means that any disciplinary action (suspensions)levied may carry over to other events or for the duration of the tournament season.

We will follow with an in-depth rules clinic on all restrictions prior to the start of the event(s). Thank you for your understanding that safety (and adherence to IBJJF standards) is of paramount concern at all BJJO events. We look forward to seeing you at the event!
